The reason that the game of 21 became known as Blackjack is because when it was first played in the States, players were offered bonus payouts on certain hands. One bonus was a ten to one payout if a hand included a black jack and the ace of spades – hence the name Blackjack. Although the bonus no longer exists in this format, in today’s game, the term Blackjack can be used for any hand made up of an ace plus a ten or face card.
